Tax Preparation Checklist

Tax day is less than a month away and if you haven’t prepared your taxes yet, it’s time to get a move on! With the hustle and bustle of life, it can be easy to miss paperwork when preparing your information. Make the process a little easier this year by using the following check list for your individual tax returns:

Personal Information

  • Social Security numbers and dates of birth for you, your spouse, your dependents
  • Copies of last year’s tax return for you and your spouse (not required, but useful)
  • If using Direct deposit provide your Bank account number and routing number

Income

  • 2016 W2, 1099, and K1 forms for you and your spouse
    • 1099-C forms for cancellation of debt
    • 1099-INT, -DIV, -B, or K-1s for investment or interest income
    • 1099-G forms for unemployment income, or state or local tax refunds
    • 1099-S forms for income from sale of a property
    • 1099-MISC forms for you and your spouse (independent contractor work)
    • 1099-R, Form 8606 for payments/distributions from IRAs or retirement plans
    • 1099 for royalties for natural gas or land leases
    • SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits received
    • Business or farming income – profit/loss statement
    • Rental property income and expenses: profit/loss statement, suspended loss information
    • Alimony Received
    • Forms 6252, principal and interest collected during the year, Social Security Number and address for payer
    • Miscellaneous income

Deductions

  • Child care costs: provider’s name, address, tax ID, and amount paid
  • Education costs: Form 1098-T
  • Forms 1098: Mortgage interest paid
  • Charitable donations: cash amounts and non-cash descriptions, include official documentation from charity
  • Medical and dental expense records
  • Investment interest expenses
  • Casualty and theft losses
  • Records of business expenses not reimbursed
  • Records of home business expenses, home size/office size, home expenses
  • Rental property income/expenses

Adjustments

  • Form 1098-E for student loan interest paid (or loan statements for student loans)
  • Form 1098-T for tuition paid
  • Records of IRA contributions made during the year
  • Receipts for any qualifying energy-efficient home improvements
  • Records of Medical Savings Account (MSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions
  • Self-employed health insurance payment records
  • Records of moving expenses
  • Alimony paid
  • Self-employed pension plans

Taxes Paid

  • State and Local taxes
  • Property Taxes
  • Real Estate Taxes
  • Estimated Tax Payments for self-employed
